Rihanna - Anti: Album Review

After many delays, Rihanna’s highly-anticipated eighth studio album and follow-up to 2012's Unapologetic, Anti, is finally here. The album is available on streaming through Tidal.
Rihanna released her album. I downloaded Tidal just to listen to it. I like it. It really carries the sound of BBHM, although the song isn't on the album. Her lyric writing is okay; it's very repetitive and is catchy, but some songs actually use this repetition successively. The worst song, and perhaps the most annoying song of 2016, is the song "Work" with Drake, which I thought would be better. The highlights are the production and vocals, although the production proves to be the main star.

She covers Tame Impala's "Same Ol' Mistakes" in the most awkward of ways, and this may be because I know where the song truly belongs, but it's so poorly arranged into the production concept. There is little to no change to the original beat, and she seemed to make the song annoying in a way, almost as if the frustration of it not fitting into the album properly and it basically being stolen from Tame Impala, regardless of their consent, made it sound bad. The song just didn't fit into the concept of the album and could've been easily replaced by her singles American Oxygen, FourFiveSeconds or BBHM while keeping the aesthetic of the Album consistent.

She also seems to be embracing her Island roots in this album. It's refreshing, and coincides well with the album art that features a young art, while covered in this glamour and art appeal brought on by fame.
The song Love On The Brain is probably my favorite song besides "Consideration" and "Woo". She seems to have been influenced by Beyoncé in this song, and the production is eerily similar to Bey's "Superpower" featuring Frank Ocean. Even in the lyrics, it seems like a copy of the song.
Another highlight is "Higher." Vocally, this is probably her best performance we've ever heard, and most definitely the best on the album. It contrasts over the weak instrumental, and although it's short, the length (or lack thereof) makes it even better.
A lot of shorter songs are in this album. Idk whether this was intentional or just the way that the album flowed, but I definitely wish she gave us an epic that showcased the production. I think the album would've been better just by adding that type of song.
Overall, this was a pretty good album, but I don't think it was worth the wait. I think that she delivered some good songs, and there were some bad ones as well.
Not a lot of the album seemed original, save for a few songs, but they all do pull from different influences. Seamlessly she blends braggadocio and vulnerability. I think that the lyrics aren't anything to marvel at although they aren't bad, I think that her voice was amazing throughout the album, but I also think that the creative direction could have been better in efforts to make it cohesive. It's almost as if she added in "Work" and "Same Ol' Mistakes" as a prank. But I would much rather have BBHM and FourFiveSeconds to replace them.

Favorites: "Desperado" "Consideration" "Higher"
Least Favorites: "Same Ol' Mistakes" "Work" "Kiss It Better"
Rate: Strong 6/10.
